For 27 years, Rabbi Alexander Duchovny has been a central figure in the growth and strengthening of Progressive Jewish life in Ukraine. As one of the pioneers who helped rebuild the Progressive Movement after the fall of the Soviet Union, his leadership helped shape a new chapter for Jewish communities across the country.
When Rabbi Duchovny returned to Kyiv in 1999, there were 14 Progressive Jewish congregations in Ukraine. By 2014, that number had grown to 47. Throughout those years, he served not only as a rabbi, but also as an educator, mentor and spiritual leader, helping communities grow and supporting the development of a new generation of Jewish leadership.
His commitment became even more visible after the full-scale war began in 2022. Despite shelters, evacuations and constant uncertainty, Rabbi Duchovny continued to support his communities spiritually and practically. Even after relocating to Haifa, he continued returning to Ukraine to lead services, Seders, High Holy Day gatherings, camps and Shabbatons.
Now, as Rabbi Duchovny begins a new chapter as Rabbi Emeritus, his legacy continues through the communities and leaders he helped build. His 27 years of service are not only a story of the past, but also a foundation for the future of Progressive Jewish life in Ukraine.
