The World Union mourns the passing of Gilbert Lederman Z”L, former president of the Beth Hillel Synagogue in Brussels, Belgium, on July 1st.
A prominent leader in Belgian Progressive Judaism that oversaw the cooperation and coming together of our two communities in Brussels, Lederman was also a significant figure in the EUPJ and the World Union, including as a member of their Executive Boards. The Gilbert Lederman Award for Outstanding Achievement awards EUPJ Baalei Tefillah Europe students. The pioneering program trains lay leaders to lead prayers for progressive congregations around the continent.
“Gilbert was the embodiment of Jewish leadership at his best: deep but fun, original thinker and team player, gentle while holding high standards. He has been and will continue to be such an inspiration for all those who have been lucky to cross his path.”
— Stephane Beder, WUPJ Senior Vice Chair in France
The World Union of Progressive Judaism extends condolences to his wife Veronika, their children Sarah and Nathan, as well as to all his family.
May his memory continue to bless us all.
The funeral will take place this Tuesday, July 5, at 10:30 am at Gan Hashalom cemetery, and the Shiva and Seudat Havraah at the Beth Hillel Synagogue.
