Beit Luria, the 11th Progressive Synagogue in South Africa and the first Progressive Shul opened by a female rabbi, celebrated its official opening and the receiving of a Torah scroll donated by Rabbi Hillel Cohn of San Bernardino in California, USA.
“It is truly a thrill to be with you today and to witness the formal establishment of Beit Luria, a synagogue and community that I know will bring rich blessings to Jews of this great city and country as well as immense pride to the Jewish People throughout the world,” said Rabbi Cohn during the ceremony that took place on September 8th.
Rabbi Julia Margolis and Beit Luria Board Directors look forward to a new journey together with SAUPJ and the World Union, to advance and promote the traditions and values of Progressive Judaism within the community and by extension our country and the worldwide movement.
Beit Luria started its journey in 2016 when many members of the local community had indicated that they were looking for an alternative service and many felt that it was time for a synagogue to be led by a female Rabbi in Johannesburg.
