Sunday May 14
9:00 Introduction to Israeli Legal System: Turkish Law, British Law and Jewish Law in Israeli Jurisprudence with Dr. David Schorr, senior lecturer at the Tel Aviv University Faculty of Law, where he heads the David Berg Institute for Law and History as well as the Law and Environment Program. His research interests include environmental and natural-resource law, legal history, and environmental history, and his work has won the support of multiple fellowships and grants, including from the Israel Science Foundation and the US National Endowment for the Humanities.

11:00 Current Issues in Intellectual Property Law: Dr. Kim Treiger-Bar-Am has taught at Bar Ilan University since her return to Israel upon completion of her master’s and doctoral studies at the University of Oxford (M.Jur. ’98, D.Phil. ’06). Her earlier education was at Yale College and Law School (’85 B.A., ’89 J.D.). Her main research and teaching interests in Civil Rights extend to speech theory and doctrine, and in Intellectual Property, she studies the juncture between speech rights and rights under copyright. She has published widely and lectured in the United States, Israel, Denmark, and in London most recently at the Tate Gallery’s conference on “Copyrighting Creativity”.

15:00 Land, Ownership and Property Rights: Dr. Rachelle Alterman of the Technion – Israel
Institute of Technology. And Alan Mallach FAICP.
Rachelle Alterman is the Founding President of the International Academic Association on Planning, Law, and Property Rights and an Honorary Member of the Association of European Schools of Planning. Dr. Alterman specialized in cross-national comparative analysis of the relationship between planning law, land use regulations, property rights and planning practice. She has published 8 international books, over 100 academic papers, and has been invited to speak at conferences and seminars in 35 countries.
Alan Mallach FAICP has been engaged with urban revitalization, neighborhood stabilization and housing provision for fifty years. A senior fellow with the Center for Community Progress, he has held a number of public and private sector positions including serving as director of housing & economic development for the city of Trenton, New Jersey. He has taught at a number of universities, was a visiting professor at the University of Nevada Las Vegas, and currently teaches in the graduate city planning program at Pratt Institute in New York City. He has authored many books, including Bringing Buildings Back: From Vacant Properties to Community Assets and A Decent Home: Planning, Building and Preserving Affordable Housing; as well as numerous articles in legal and scholarly journals, book chapters, and research and policy reports. He is no stranger to Israel, having spent much of his childhood there, and more recently, as a frequent speaker in Israel in scholarly and public forums on housing and urban policy issues. He is a member of the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Certified Planners, holds a B.A. degree from Yale College, and lives in Roosevelt, New Jersey.
