Meet Evgenia Futerman & Larisa Ismagilova: Community Leaders of Hava Negila, the Reform Jewish Congregation in Chelyabinsk.
Evgenia Futerman’s journey to the Hava Negila community was one of discovery and connection sparked by her son Gleb’s curiosity about their Jewish heritage. What began as a simple visit to introduce her son to Jewish traditions blossomed into a deeply rooted commitment, as Friday night Shabbat services became a cherished weekly ritual.
Over time, Evgenia found herself called to step up in her community’s leadership, filling roles left vacant by beloved members who had either moved away or passed on. She and Larisa now lead the community’s services, blending music and worship to keep their gatherings vibrant and meaningful. They took their leadership to the next level by participating in the Russian Shlichei Tzibor training program and the WUPJ Shlichei Tzibor Israel seminar this year.
The Hava Negila community, guided by its dedicated founder Evgeny Ilyich Dobin since 1992, thrives on tradition and mutual support. Members share joyful and challenging moments alike, gathering under the stars for Shabbat retreats, and embracing the custom of “sharing good things”—a time each week to reflect on blessings and struggles.
In the photo, Evgenia and Larisa hold a special book created by the community in memory of their late accompanist, Lyubov Kaptelina. The book is a tribute to her legacy, filled with her soulful poems and translations of Jewish stories that continue to inspire.
In a message to their fellow Jews, Evgenia and Larisa emphasize the importance of honoring heritage and supporting Israel. As they carry on Hava Negila’s legacy, they encourage others to build strong communities rooted in love, resilience, and shared tradition.
